Preparation and properties of metal powders
Dec 17, 2019

Metal powder production has a variety of methods, including: mineral reduction method, atomization method, mechanical crushing method and so on.

1) mineral reduction method: powder mineral reduction method is a process in which metal ores are reduced under certain metallurgical conditions to obtain metal materials of a certain shape and size, and then the metal materials are crushed and treated to obtain powder.

The mineral reduction method is mainly applicable to the production of iron powder. The purity of iron powder is directly related to the purity of iron ore. In addition to iron powder, mineral reduction method can also produce cobalt, molybdenum, calcium powder. For example, refractory metal compound powders such as carbides, borides, and silicides are obtained by the combination or chemical substitution of metal oxide powders with carbon, boron, or silicon powders. For the preparation of carbide powder, carbon black powder can be used to directly reduce metal oxides. The reactions are as follows: MO and MC refer to metal oxides and metal carbides in general

This reduction process requires a higher temperature. For example, the preparation of tungsten carbide powder at 1400-1,600oc is usually carried out in a carbon tube furnace, and the reaction can be carried out through hydrogen or in a vacuum.

2) electrolysis electrolysis is the use of metal salt aqueous solution electrolysis precipitation or molten salt electrolysis precipitation of metal particles or spongy metal blocks, and then mechanical method for crushing.

3) powder atomization method is to atomize molten metal liquid by jet air (air or inert gas), water vapor or the mechanical force of water and quenching action, and get metal powder.

Due to the high purity and alloyed powder obtained by atomization, the powder has its characteristics, high yield and low cost, so its application develops rapidly. It can be used to produce powders of iron, steel, lead, aluminum, zinc, copper and their alloys.

4) mechanical crushing the most commonly used mechanical crushing method is the steel ball or cemented carbide ball ball grinding of metal block or grain raw materials, suitable for the preparation of some brittle metal powder, or brittle metal powder after treatment (such as after hydrogenation to become brittle titanium powder).
