Definition of powder metallurgy

Powder metallurgy is an industrial technique for producing metal powders or powders (or mixtures of metal powders and nonmetallic powders) as raw materials, forming and sintering them to produce metal materials, composites and various types of products. At present, powder metallurgy technology has been widely used in the fields of transportation, machinery, electronics, aerospace, weapons, biology, new energy, information and nuclear industry, and has become one of the most dynamic branches of new materials science.

Powder metallurgy technology has a series of advantages such as remarkable energy saving, material saving, excellent performance, high precision and good stability, which is very suitable for mass production. In addition, some of the materials and complex parts that cannot be prepared by traditional casting and machining methods can also be made by powder metallurgy technology, so they are highly valued by industry.


Powder metallurgy products industry includes iron tools, hard alloy, magnetic materials and powder metallurgy products. In the narrow sense, PM products only refer to PM products, including PM parts (accounting for the vast majority), oil-bearing and metal injection molding products.
